Pool Fence / Pool Barrier Inspection Checklist

  1. The fence around your pool must be a minimum height of 1.2 metres measured from a fixed stable ground.

  2. The gap on either side of the vertical bars when squeezed with your non-dominant hand must be 100mm or less.

  3. All pool fence panels must be firmly secured to the posts.

  4. The pool fence posts must be firmly secured to the ground.

  5. Timber boundary pool fences must be structurally sound.

  6. All timber boundary pool fence palings must be present and secure to the fence.

  7. Gaps under your pool fence must be a maximum of 100mm.

  8. Are all parts of the living and dwelling areas protected by a child resistant barrier measuring at least 1200mm from all sides?

Around and In the Pool Fence Area

  1. Are there any climbable objects* such as 1200mm of outside the pool fence?

  2. Are there any climbable objects* within 300mm clear zone inside the pool fence area?

  3. Is there any objects* within 900mm where the pool fence intersects another fence?

  4. Is the CPR sign current and in clear view from inside the pool area?

  5. Are the windows which open directly into the pool area open only a maximum of 100mm or have a security type screen over it?

  6. Are there any potential hand holds or foot holds within 900mm from the top or bottom of the pool fence?

  7. If you have a patio, deck, pergola or balcony that forms a pool fence, you must have one side permanently open so you can clearly see and supervise young children in the pool.

Pool Gates, Latches & Hinges

  1. Are the pool gate hinges a minimum distance of 900mm apart and not within the 900mm climbable zone from where the fences intersect?

  2. Does the pool gates open out and way from the pool area?

  3. Is the pool gate locking mechanism at least 1500mm from the ground?

  4. Does your pool gates self close and self lock from any open position?
